Custom Course Builder Walkthrough

Learn how to create a comprehensive custom course using the course builder. This step-by-step guide for managers covers building courses, lessons, quizzes, and adding various content modules (text, files, embedded video, and toolbox resources) for effective team training.

Applicable Roles: Managers

Prerequisites:

  • Access to the custom course builder
  • Materials for the courses like videos, embed, presentations, etc.
  • Quiz questions if necessary

Step-by-step walkthrough:

1. First, lets locate the custom course builder dashboard. You will find the portal under the custom course section.

2. Now that we are in the dashboard, here is a breakdown for everything:

  • Course - a course is a combination of units that you create and arrange to suit your needs. Have an uncommon piece of equipment that you train your team on? Would you like to update the employee handbook and share it? You can build it here.
  • Lesson - a lesson is a visual course unit that can contain various modules such as text, files, embedded video, and more. Details about each lesson module can be found while building your lesson.
  • Quiz - a quiz is an interactive course unit that can contain any amount of questions you need. You can add new questions while building the quiz, or pull from your library of previously created questions.
  • Questions - questions make up the content of your quizzes, which can then be added to a course. Use these for training, to conduct a survey, or for any other purpose.
  • Files - a file module lets you add documents, images, videos, or audio to your lesson. Just upload your file, add it to a lesson, and your users will be able to view it in your course.
  • Toolbox - a toolbox module offers resources to help you build your lesson. You can find things like Safety Data Sheets, Powerpoints, and Safety Tips here to improve your course.
Tip: if you see the tooltip icon anywhere, you can hover your cursor for it for quick explanations and assistance.
There are two ways to create a course now. You can either start with the course itself or start with the components like the lessons, quiz, and files you will attach with the course.

For this guide, let's start with the course first.

 3. In this step, let us go ahead and create a course by clicking the course icon inside the courses section:

Now let us discuss all of the properties needed to create a course:
Auto enroll yourself in the course - optional - Checking the box will enroll you in the course once it is created regardless if it already has content or not. It is highly recommended to check this so previewing the course later on will be more convenient.
Image - optional - The image uploaded here will serve as a thumbnail for your course.
SKU - required - commonly known as stock keeping unit but we can designate a SKU for courses as well to make it organized.
Name - required - this will serve as the title of the course.
Course Type - required - this property will dictate what type of modules you can attach to the course.
  • Custom Course - selecting custom course will allow you to attach lessons and quizzes in the course.
  • Interactive Training - selecting interactive training will allow you to attach pre-built courses like SCORM in the course.

Course Visibility required -This property will dictate if your course is accessible.

Hidden courses are not visible in Library, My Courses and Bookmarks. They still appear in "Course Results" and "Video Views History" reports for all users.

"Results" section of hidden courses is accessible for all users.

Date of Production optional - can be used for sorting.

Description/Objective optional - can be used to contain the overview of the course.

For this walkthrough, I will set up my Knowledge Base like this:

Once you have added everything, you can save which I did in the screenshot above or go to course content and build everything before saving.

3. Let us now go ahead and create the contents for the course. Go ahead and click on Course Content.

For this walkthrough, let us build a custom course with a lesson that has all module types and then a quiz.

Let us now create the lesson.

Here is a breakdown for all the properties in create lesson window:

Lesson Namerequired - this will serve as the section name as well.

Content optional - a place for description.

Timer required - setting this value will prevent the learner from moving on to the next section until the amount of seconds set have passed. Set to 0 to prevent a timer.

For this walkthrough, I created my lesson like this:

Now that the lesson is created, we can now start adding content for the lesson in lesson content:

From here, we can now add all the modules we will need and in this walkthrough, we will add one of everything:

Let's start with a text module.

Here is the breakdown for all the properties in a text module:

Namerequired - this will serve as the section name as well.

Content optional - a place for description.

For this walkthrough, I created my text module like this:

Make sure to add it to course section:

The next one will be a file. For this specific module, we need to go back to the custom course builder dashboard and upload our file so we can attach it in the module.

Just add your file in the uploader by dragging it from your computer or pressing the choose file button and then click start upload.

Now that we have all the files we need, we can go back to course we are editing and add a file module:

Here is the breakdown for all the properties in a files module:

Namerequired - this will serve as the section name as well.

Content optional - a place for description.

File - optional - set the file here by selecting the file from the dropdown. It will render inside the lesson the file module is attached to.

For this walkthrough, I set up my files module like this:

Make sure to add it to course section:

Let us now add a download module next.

The difference between files and downloads module is that files module will render the file inside the course or lesson while downloads will be a button learners can click on to download the file attached in the section to their computer.

Here is the breakdown for all the properties in a downloads module:

Namerequired - this will serve as the section name as well.

Content optional - a place for description.

Downloadable Files - required - the file manager will show up once the module is saved to the lesson and course.

For this walkthrough, I set up my downloads module like this:

I added it to course section and opened it again:

Click on the Open File Manager to start adding files:

Click Upload on the top left to initiate the upload:

Drag and drop files here or select choose file to select from your computer and then start upload:

Once you have uploaded all of the files for your downloads section here, you can now close the window and update module.

As you can see from the screenshot above, the test file is now listed in the downloadable files.

The next module we would add is a embedded video module.

Here is the breakdown for all the properties in a embedded video module:

Namerequired - this will serve as the section name as well.

Content optional - a place for description.

Embed Code required - this is where you will place your embed code that will render in the lesson this module is attached to. Embed can come from a variety of sources and the most common being YouTube.

Click HERE to learn how to get embed codes from YouTube.

For this walkthrough, I set my embedded video like the following:
Make sure to click on add to course section:
For the last module, it will be the toolbox module and it can added by clicking the button shown below:
Here is the breakdown for all the properties in a toolbox module:
Namerequired - this will serve as the section name as well.
Content optional - a place for description.
Toolbox Typeoptional - this property is only used to filter the dropdown for the toolbox selector below.
Toolboxrequired - select the specific toolbox file you want to show up on the course.

In this walkthrough, I set up my toolbox module like this:
Make sure to add it to course section:
And now we are done with the lesson modules. All we need to do is save and add it to the lesson:
4. For the next step, we can start building a quiz that will go in our course. To start building a quiz, click on the button shown in the screenshot below:
Here is the breakdown for all the properties in a create quiz window:
Namerequired - this will serve as the section name as well.
Weightrequired - Set this value to make the quiz worth X more points. A weight of 2 would make the quiz worth 2 times the points.
Timer required - setting this value will prevent the learner from moving on to the next section until the amount of seconds set have passed. Set to 0 to prevent a timer.
Count Toward Curriculumrequired - setting this value determines whether this quiz will count toward the learner's final score.
Alignment Optionsoptional - you can set in this section how questions and answer will align in the course. Left is the default for question alignment and center is the default for answer alignment.
Label Optionsoptional - these options will add number labels for the questions and letter labels for the answer options.

For this walkthrough, this is how my quiz is set up:
Make sure to save the quiz:
Once it is saved, we can start adding questions in the quiz content:
Let us go ahead and create a question for this quiz:
Here is the breakdown for all the properties in the create question window:
Questionrequired - write your question for the quiz here.
Question Typerequired - there are 2 question types:
  • Multiple Choice (Single Answer): Select this option and you will only be able to set one answer as the correct answer.
  • Multiple Choice (Multiple Answer): Select this option and you will only be able to set multiple answers as the correct answer.
    • If this option is selected, you can set it to be partial credit in case you want your learners to get score for the answers they got correct.

Feedback optional - there are two types:

  • Any - a feedback will show up regardless if the learner got it correct, incorrect, or partially correct.
  • Correct / Incorrect / Partial - A feedback field can be set up for each possible outcome.

Answersrequired - write the answers here.

  • To add more options click here:
  • To set an answer option as correct, click here:

For this walkthrough, here is my example question and answers.

Make sure to save question:

Repeat the process until you have added all of your questions. Once everything is done, make sure to save and add the quiz.

Make sure to save the changes to course since the quiz is freshly added:

And now we are pretty much done with the course and we have walked through everything!
